Decarbonize ocean shipping with zero-emission, whale-inspired propulsion systems
Time is running out if we are to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. At Bluefins we are convinced that we need to target the largest emitting industry sectors to accelerate global decarbonization.
Transportation accounts for nearly 17% of all GHG emissions. Ocean shipping alone, with more than 100.000 vessels carrying 90% of all traded goods every year, accounts for nearly 3% of all GHG emissions, as well as 13% of SOx and 15% of NOx emissions.
We believe we can change that.
We are an impact-driven team designing “zero-emission” auxiliary propulsion systems based on a wave energy converting technology inspired by whale tail fins, and developed with leading French research organization Ifremer.
Our aim is to provide shipowners worldwide with a reliable solution to achieve their decarbonization targets, by reducing fuel consumption and GHG emissions by at least 20%.
Our product consists of a specifically designed, articulated and controlled hydrofoil attached to the stern of the ship, completed with performance-enhancing routing algorithms ; It can be installed on newbuilds as well as during refit operations, and is applicable to most ships. Added benefits include pitch stabilization, as well as the potential for on-board electricity generation.

A whale-inspired propulsion system Our solution, developed in partnership with leading French research institute Ifremer, consists of an hydrofoil attached to the stern of the ship through a set of mechanical arms, and converts the pitching motion of the ship into thrust.
